Climate Chaos: What Form Should Our Protest Take? Wednesday November 14th, 7.30pm

BCCF has two exciting pieces of news for you today:
First we warmly invite you next Wednesday, November 14th, to an evening of short films and discussion focussing on non-violent direct action and civil disobedience  – in the face of the increasing risk of irreversible climate catastrophe.

Can we as civilians stop the destruction of our climate? The evidence says that we could be heading for extinction. The recent IPCC report tells us what we already know – to keep within the crucial 1.5 degrees temperature rise above pre-industrial measures, we MUST be putting a whole raft of measures in place NOW to hugely reduce our carbon emissions within the next 12 years. But this is looking increasingly unlikely; Government inaction against the impending climate crisis continues – with no mention of climate change in the Budget, a halt on onshore wind, tax breaks for fossil fuel companies including frackers, easing of planning laws for frackers, a new runway at Heathrow, huge investment in road building, the recent selling off of the Green Investment Bank, the scrapping of zero carbon homes etc…

Join us for a series of short films and discussion about what form our protest should take, given the urgency of the situation. Is there a moral imperative to go beyond the law? Is the ‘social contract’ with government broken, in their failure to protect us & the next generation? What do you think? The deadly heatwave that gripped the world over the summer is only a glimpse of what is to come if we do not properly address the crisis. The government and environmental NGOs have failed to do so. Is it time to rebel?
Find as usual in Room G011 (ground floor) in the Gateway Building, University of Bedfordshire, Polhill Avenue, Bedford, MK41 9EA. We start at 7.30pm prompt. Our events are free entry but we do ask for donations where possible to cover costs and to allow us to continue to hold events.

AND secondly, you may have heard about the EXTINCTION REBELLION public talk  at 2-4pm at the Panacea Museum in Bedford this Saturday, November 10th. This movement is growing across the country, with hundreds of plaudits from academia and environmental figures such as George Monbiot. Some of us will be there. We’d love to see you there too. Free and open to all concerned about climate chaos and what we, as citizens, can do. Here’s a link to the Facebook event:
